Senior Software Engineer
Overview
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer. Headquartered in Los Angeles, California, Right Balance provides top-tier technology talent for innovative companies in the US. We’re in the top 50 companies to watch in LA.
Client Engagement Details
Our client is a well-funded, LA-based AI company that has become the largest online screening company in its space, having delivered 45M+ reports to over 3,600 customers with 99.5% data accuracy. Their AI-native platform helps enterprise talent teams identify workplace-relevant behavioral risk by compliantly analyzing public online sources, helping organizations avoid workplace misconduct, prevent costly legal action, and make better hiring decisions. They're trusted by major global employers and integrate with leading HR platforms.
At our client, Senior Software Engineers are owners, not just implementers. They're responsible for the design, development, operation, and long-term evolution of the systems they build. Success in this role is measured by production outcomes, engineering judgment, and the ability to deliver durable, scalable solutions that create customer value.
This is a genuinely AI-first engineering role, fitting for a company whose own product is built on AI. AI-assisted development is a core competency here, not an optional productivity tool. You'll use AI throughout the full software development lifecycle, technical design, implementation planning, coding, testing, debugging, documentation, and operational analysis. As the company continues to evolve its AI-first engineering platform, you'll also design, build, and maintain AI agents that automate engineering workflows and power product capabilities.
What You’ll Do:
- Own systems end-to-end and remain accountable for their behavior in production.
- Monitor, support, and continuously improve the systems you own well beyond initial deployment.
- Make thoughtful technical decisions, balance competing priorities, and understand the long-term impact of your work.
- Treat AI as a core part of the engineering workflow, leveraging AI agents throughout the development lifecycle while maintaining complete ownership and accountability for every decision and line of code.
- Design scalable distributed systems and microservice architectures.
- Debug, troubleshoot, and support production systems.
- Balance speed, quality, scalability, and maintainability.
- Design, build, and integrate AI agents and agentic workflows to automate engineering tasks and solve product challenges.
- Mentor peers through technical leadership and code reviews.
Availability: Full-time.
What’s in it for you
- Learn and evolve your skills using the latest and greatest technology tools in a rapidly growing company.
- Learn from the best people around you. We constantly challenge the status quo and invent new ways of building a great product.
- 100% remote. Work anywhere, whether it is remotely in the comfort of your home, in a shared co-working space, in an RV on the beach, or while being a nomad in another country.
- Work on challenging problems, innovate, and positively impact many people's lives while having fun doing it.
Required Qualifications
- Upper intermediate to fluent speaking and writing English.
- 5+ years of experience building backend applications with Python and FastAPI or similar framework.
- Expert knowledge of REST API design and implementation.
- 3+ years developing and deploying applications using AWS serverless technologies and related cloud infrastructure.
- Proven ability to validate, refine, and take full ownership of AI-generated designs, code, tests, and documentation before deployment.
- Demonstrated experience working in an AI-first engineering environment where AI agents are a standard part of daily development workflows.
- Experience designing, building, and integrating AI agents or agentic workflows to automate engineering processes or deliver product capabilities.
- Experience developing front-end applications using JavaScript, TypeScript, React, or comparable technologies.
- Experience owning production software throughout its full lifecycle.
- Strong cloud and DevOps experience.
Nice to haves
- Understanding of prompt engineering, tool orchestration, context management, and evaluation techniques for AI-powered systems.
- Experience mentoring peers through technical leadership and code reviews.
- Comfortable working with ambiguity and driving work forward independently.
- Continuous learner who embraces new tools and engineering practices.
